Using Twitter to advance your brand: A comparison between WordPress and Movable Type

by Cecily on August 25, 2008

Wpsatwitter

I don’t claim to be a social networking expert, but as someone who has spent quite a bit of time thinking about end-to-end user experience and how companies can best use social services like Twitter to their best advantage, I decided to see how two of the biggest names in blogging use Twitter to support their brand identity.

Use FriendFeed to broaden your community

by Cecily on June 27, 2008

Friendfeed - share somethingThis post could be subtitled “Or: where the hell have you people been in the last 9 years?”

I’ve been blogging a long time and across several different domains, although always under my real name. I’ve built solid relationships with people through blogging and by virtue of being connected to a super-connected person. I have a blogfam, and it’s a beautiful thing.

What I’ve never really had, however, is an audience.

  • Never ordering from Zappos Canada again. $15 dollars to return a pair of shoes, when US customers don’t have to pay it? Criminal! #
  • That $15 dollar Zappos fee sucks especially hard when the shoes were on sale for $30 to begin with. #
  • Sometimes living in this country feels like a punishment, but usually only when it comes to online shopping. #
  • Watching "Scenes of a Sexual Nature" only because Ewan McGregor and Adrian Lester are in it: http://is.gd/dsV #
  • Thinking of buying bike shoes on the recommendation of a friend. #
  • Canon people: Spend $75 at Shootsac.com in May and be entered to win one of 3 lenses. (Sucks that this offer only appeals to Canon shooters) #
  • Just realized I left a favorite pair of shoes in the Bay Area. #
  • Twitterverse: has anyone out there had any experience with Trek Bicycling’s Women Specific Design (WSD) bikes? #
  • @library_chic Yeah, but it’ll take about a month to get them. #
  • @geekandahalf Thanks for the tip. I have a bike, but I want a better and more comfortable one. #
  • @michellej Are they women specific designs? #
  • Is it too much to ask for bike manufacturers to develop navigation that is organized by gender or type of riding you intend to do? #
  • Navigation on their websites, that is #
  • @kcxd Well, hallelujah! Now if only I could find someone to take my current bike off my hands. #
  • Elbow deep in Plone. #
  • @hillarygayle I never get tired of that song or that movie. #
  • Am I the only one who wishes Pitchfork would use a bigger font on their site? #
  • Hungry. Wanting to eat something totally bad for me though I know I shouldn’t. :( #
  • I can’t keep up with you politicos. What has HRC done now? #
  • Twitterverse: other than #9rules, can you suggest any other blog portals? #
  • Wasn’t it John Stewart who said something about wanting a president who was better than him? #
  • Upside to living in Canada: our politics aren’t (usually) so racially polarized. #
  • @Miss604 Caked on butter? I think you’ve just put me off my lunch. :) #
  • @mellemusic I want liquored up cupcakes! #
  • Re-reading the Go Fug Yourself post where Britney names her children Kevney Cheetos and Britven Red Bull. #
  • I haven’t visited since the last Friday Night Lights episode aired, but my God, the new TWoP design is annoying. #
  • I’m on the "Top Tweets" board for Twitter Local/Vancouver but still nobody here knows who I am. #
  • There are a couple of library staff making out right now in our office. #
  • OK, not making out exactly, but there’s some smooching going on. #
  • @mellemusic @michellej This is for you: http://cupcakecamp.pbwiki.com/ #
  • @mellemusic Not only is it fun to say, it’s fun to do! #
  • @slamhita I used to think I could never work in a library either, but 4 years of working for soul sucking corporations disabused me of that. #
  • @slamhita And they are very sensual places. Must be all that freedom of information. *wiggles eyebrows* #
  • Now thanks to @slamhita and @mellemusic I’m contemplating making out in a library. #
  • @slamhita You dirrty. #
  • I’ve never done it but I had a friend who swore by the men’s restroom on the 3rd fl. of the Ga. State University Library. #
  • @irinaslutsky For the same reasons as my sexually adventurous male friend was using them? #

  • I said I wasn’t going to watch the results but I’m a frakking junkie. *twitches* #
  • I can get a free copy of Cory Doctorow’s new YA novel. SWEET! http://is.gd/cZ5 #
  • @RPM See, now that you’ve made that Jamal Simmons comparison, I’m going to think about the theme to the Munsters whenever I see him. #
  • Eight Belles… Eight Belles… #
  • Stupid conference call. I want to hear what’s going on! #
  • @ruby What’d she say?! What’d she say?! #
  • @geekandahalf OH EM GEE I just figured out what your avatar is. #
  • @celeduc All the better to turn him into a projectile. #
  • I’m going to start a petition to bring back the butch(ish) Rachel Maddow. #
  • @mellemusic My husband loves that shot. #
  • @geekandahalf I think people were impressed by McDermott’s head of hair. #
  • @RPM I love the way McDermott kept reiterating "Hammond isn’t the county with the problem….we counted our votes *HOURS* ago!" #
  • I’m wondering if this is going to turn out to be a "Dewey Defeats Truman" kind of night? At any rate, I’m going to bed. #
  • Watching Donna Brazile go all sassy on Paul Begala’s milquetoast ass: http://is.gd/deg #
  • @arsepoetica Are we talking about favorite high school colognes? If so, mine was Grey Flannel. Ooh, child. #
  • @tiffanybbrown Agreed with @misterjt re: the disappearing "I will be". I’m also the first to add librarian. No surprise there. :) #
  • @arsepoetica Ew. In my high school, only jackasses wore Polo. Strangely enough, I don’t like cologne on men anymore. #
  • I had a scary moment last night when I agreed with Chris Matthews about voters who supported Limbaugh’s Operation Chaos strategy. *shudders* #
  • Hee. My photo is now the header on @mellemusic ’s blog. #
  • MC Gravella Hellacopter. #
  • I’m officially dead. Somebody call the funeral home. #
  • @geekandahalf *perk* Did somebody say thick thighs? #

  • Does anyone else have to see movie blockbusters on the day they come out, otherwise you lose interest? #
  • @urbanbohemian If you go to the 10pm showing, you usually only have to put up with teenagers. At least they’re quiet during the movie. #
  • @jbrotherlove See, that’s why even though I’ll be out of town, you can bet I’ll be parked in a movie theatre tonight. #
  • @younglibrarian I’m picky, but that discretion goes out the window during summer blockbuster season. #
