Obama Campaign Opportunity for Western Canada

by Cecily on August 28, 2008

Yes, you read that correctly.

Democrats Abroad announced that Americans Abroad for Obama is looking for a Regional Field Director to work with the Obama Campaign in the Vancouver/Western Canada region.

The position is full-time and comes with a $1500/month salary and a $350/month budget. The position also includes a $2500 (total) travel budget.

The selected candidate will travel around the region, coordinate closely with the Democrats Abroad organization in the region, and create new volunteer groups/activitie sin cities/towns where Americans live but no DA chapter exists (as well as assist each DA chapter in the region with their own voter registration events and efforts). Interested parties should send a resume and cover letter in care of Kim Reed, Executive Director of Americans Abroad for Obama, to americansabroad at barackobama dot com.

And if you’re not doing anything tonight, join Americans Abroad Vancouver at the Wolf & Hound Pub (W. Broadway and Dunbar) tonight at 5:00pm to watch Sen. Obama accept the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States.

Living History

I just wanted to document this for posterity:

No tears in my eyes, but I’m feeling a chest-bursting sense of pride coupled with a knuckle-whitening fear for this man’s life and the life of his family. My mom’s been looking for a way to get me to start going to church — this historical moment might’ve been just the thing to push me toward that direction.

The real dream ticket

I’ve been calling for it for ages. I’m not going to lie: I wish the order were reversed. Still, I think this is a ticket that (almost) everyone who intends to vote Democratic in November can get behind.

“You are campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat, and you were the Republican”

by Cecily on March 13, 2008

Several people whom I love and respect are Hillary Clinton supporters. I would ask these people whom I love and respect to defend Senator Clinton’s tepid response to Geraldine Ferraro’s now infamous comments about Senator Obama’s worthiness. I would ask these people to explain the Clinton campaign’s assertion that Senator Obama would be an excellent choice for vice-president and the labyrinthine logic that led them to this conclusion — especially in light of their candidate’s current position in the race to gather delegates.

I would ask them, but Keith Olbermann has asked these questions far better and more eloquently than I ever could.

(The following video is almost 10 minutes long, but it’s worth every solid gold minute)

I haven’t been able to watch the news/read news sites all day after last night’s turn of events. Watching this video lifted my spirits just a bit.

Video: Interviewer Picks The Wrong Obama Supporter to Try To Railroad

by Cecily on February 19, 2008

I’m far from the most politically informed voter on the planet, but I recognize intelligence and insight when I see it. Check out this video of Obama supporter Derrick Ashong:

There are many things to love about this video; Derrick’s impassioned and informed defense of Obama’s platform, his nuanced understanding of the challenges that Americans would face while trying to implement a universal healthcare plan, are but two examples. But the thing I love most about this video is that it captures a face that is largely invisible in the media: that of a highly educated young black man who is engaged with and excited by the political process.

I have a lump in my throat just thinking about the impact this video could have.

The best thing about Romney’s departure

The best thing about Mitt Romney’s decision to drop out of the presidential race is that I have free reign to make all kinds of bad puns involving kittens and lost mittens for at least, oh, a whole day.
