Vancouverites are just mad for the iPhone… or are we just mad?

by Cecily on July 10, 2008

Seen at the Fido retail store on the corner of Robson & Seymour Streets:

I don’t know that we can read much into this; after all, it is early (these photos were taken at approximately 8:30pm). Still, I can’t help wonder if our collective outrage over Rogers’ extortionist data plans has really had an effect on our enthusiasm.

What are the lines like in your neck of the woods?

Apple Canada: Movie downloads coming!

by Cecily on May 30, 2008

Could it be? Could all my whining about the sorry state of Apple’s product releases in Canada have had an effect (not bloody likely)? First it was the news that the iPhone would soon be available to Canadian customers, and now, thanks to iLounge, we find out that Canadian Apple customers will soon be able to download movies via the iTunes store.

Finally, that video iPod of mine might actually be useful.

Canada *hearts* Obama

Related: If you’re Canadian, go to Rapspace.tv and record a video sharing your thoughts about the Obama campaign (whatever they are).

Is the iPhone near?

by Cecily on January 26, 2008

I’m not one for idle speculation, but it seems that maybe — just maybe — Canadians are a little closer to getting their hands on the iPhone:

A tip indicates that the carrier will begin offering a reworking of the company’s $20 monthly Communicate Package that allows both unlimited Internet access from a given phone as well as up to 2500 SMS text messages, 1000 MMS picture or video messages, and calling extras such as voicemail and caller ID. A separate $7 plan will offer just the Internet use and 50 minutes of video calling with Rogers’ VISION service, while a $5 plan will offer just the data alone.

An iPhone isn’t in my plans anymore at the moment until my financial fortunes improve, but after spending almost a week with the Nokia N82, I’ve come to appreciate just how valuable having easy access to mobile telephony, wireless access, and a camera in one small, portable package is to me. Seeing that a Canadian carrier is FINALLY getting the message gives me hope that more carriers will soon follow suit.

A little (grumpy) creative license

by Cecily on January 19, 2008

I saw this ad in my Yahoo!Mail (apparently Apple thinks I live in Canada and the US at the same time) and I couldn’t help taking a little creative license:

Get naked with Mary Walsh

by Cecily on December 7, 2007

Canadian author, actor, and writer Mary Walsh is inviting Canadians across the country to shake (or more correctly, show) what their mama’s gave them. Up to 500 people are needed in St. John’s, Newfoundland on Saturday, December 15, to become “flesh architecture” in Walsh’s new film.

“We’re inviting people to be part of a high-def shoot where we have 500 naked people looking this way,” Walsh told CBC News, indicating the back view.

“So it’s 500 bums and backs of head, so there are no dangly bits available to anyone.”

The best part of this, for me, is Walsh’s reason for the shoot:

“The point to us is that this is who we are,” she said. “All across the country, we are only a bunch of people, and the truth of our realness is what we have. And we all have the same stuff — some people have a more expensive coat, but nobody has a more expensive bum.”

I’m urging as many non-white, non-thin, non-young Canadians as possible to sign up and take place in this shoot. Should Walsh make her way to Vancouver, yours truly will sign up to participate. For more details on the St. John’s event, see Walsh’s Facebook page.

Vancouver’s ugly architecture: West Broadway

by Cecily on December 7, 2007

It’s time the truth was told: Vancouver is home to some of the ugliest architecture I’ve ever seen. What’s worse, is the city doesn’t seem to give a damn about it.

Golden Compass pulled from Calgary Catholic schools

by Cecily on December 5, 2007

His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)As long as the province of Alberta exists, Canada will always have to hedge, hem, and haw when it comes to their perception as the most liberal and tolerant country on the North American continent. I’d been reading a bit about how the Catholic League has called for a boycott of the movie adaptation of The Golden Compass, but this is the first I’ve heard about the books being removed from libraries.

I want to hope that all of this negative press will only benefit the movie in the end. I want to believe that enough people have had enough of the Catholic League, their scare tactics, and the act of censorship as a whole that despite the (lukewarm) early reviews, people will see the film anyway, give it a great opening weekend, and support it enough so that the other two books in the series will see their film adaptations come to light.

No Kindle, No iPhone: Why Canadians get the shaft

by Cecily on November 21, 2007

I just found out about Kindle, Amazon.com’s new wireless reader. If you haven’t heard of it, Endgadget has a brief rundown of the specs. Go read that and then come back here.
