After reading Kera Bolonik’s Salon article about new wave music and how it gave her the courage to embrace her lesbian sexuality, I couldn’t help but think about the music I listened to when I was a sexually ambiguous, confused teenager who was filled with longing, uncertainty, and a face full of acne. In response, I offer my “I’m Coming Out” mixtape.

7 for the Summer

Tiffany tagged me:
List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.
In no particular order:
- Cut Copy - Lights & Music: reminds me of nights spent at the Amory in Atlanta. I can almost see shirtless speaker twinkies when I close my eyes.
- The Go-Gos - Turn to You: not just because Rob Lowe is in the video. A quintessential summer classic, but then again, all of their songs are.
- Hot Chip - We’re Looking For a Lot of Love: an odd, down-tempo track from a band that is usually a lot dancier than this. The whole album is pretty good, but this one stands out because of the mood.
- Santogold - You’ll Find a Way: I’m a sucker for 80s music. She sounds like The Police, Martha and the Muffins, Big Country, Missing Persons, and The Cure all rolled into one.
- Girl Talk - Set it Off: for no other reason than he made The Guess Who and Mary J. Blige sound good together. Additional bonus points for the “Come On Eileen” sample. (You know you like that song. Don’t front.)
- Teriyaki Boyz - ZOCK ON: Japanese rappers + Busta Rhymes (who is so futuristic and weird, he might as well be from Japan) + Pharell’s sexy stoner vibe. Dude. HOT.
- N.E.R.D. - Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom): from the moment I heard it, it’s been in heavy rotation. The refrain is irresistible; so much so that I can (almost) overlook that the song is about doing cocaine in a nightclub bathroom.
All available here.
(I’m not tagging anyone because most of my people have been tagged already, but if you’re reading this and want to play along, go right ahead!)
Veteran rockers Triumph to reunite
Somewhere, somebody has been made very happy by the news that 80s hair metal band Triumph will reunite.
I’m not that somebody (really, I’m not), but in the spirit of giving back to the community, here’s a little memory-jogger for those of you who might not remember the Canadian rockers:

Just a little divine intervention
I love me some Alison Moyet. I once had a friend who worked at Tower Records, who, upon discovering my slavish fangirl devotion to the Divine Ms. Alf, gave me the giant foamcore display for Moyet’s album “Hoodoo“. I hung it over my bed.
For fun, here’s one of my favorite Moyet tunes.
