LCSH Changes – A Win-Win for Librarians and Patrons

in libraries, user experience

Of the many instances of library classification decisions that make me furrow my brow, the use of the term “cookery” instead of “cooking” as a subject heading is probably first on my list. Thanks to Twitter, I found out that the Library of Congress has decided to do away with cookery in subject headings, and will now use the more widely-accepted term cooking in classification.

Being the UX librarian I am, I’m tempted to call this a user experience victory, but on the other hand, this decision is really all about common sense. When was the last time you watched a “cookery” show, or took a “cookery” class? Then again, UX is about applying common sense strategies to information and physical spaces. This is one of the clearest examples of the relationship between UX and library and information science that I’ve seen in recent memory.
