See Me Speak at SXSW 2009

03.11.2009

i_speaker_webtile.gifIn case you hadn’t heard, I’ll be moderating a panel at SXSW Interactive this year. “That’s Not My Name: Beating Down Online Misogyny” features Samhita Mukhopadhyay and Ann Friedman of Feministing, and Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon, and will discuss the complex and sometimes violent ways women are treated online, especially feminist women who speak about politics. I’ve been around online for a minute (since ’93, blogging since ’98), but I’ve never encountered the kind of heated and gendered criticism and attacks that so many other women have experienced online. That fact makes me a bit of a curious choice as a moderator, but Samhita assures me that my status as someone from outside feminist blogging communities will make me more objective. I just hope I can do her, the panelists, and the discussion the justice it so rightly deserves.
The panel is scheduled for 10:00 am on Sunday, March 15 — yeah, the time isn’t ideal — so if you’re going to be in Austin for the conference, get up early, have some breakfast, some strong coffee, and walk over to the Convention Center. We’ll be in Room 8.
