Movable Type, This is Not a Good Look

02.25.2009

Because I’m a huge CMS nerd and I have no life, sometimes I like to do benchmark tests of a sort, comparing import/export and rebuild times between different systems.
Today, I exported all 534 entries on this blog and tried importing them to Movable Type. This is how long the initial rebuild took:

Dude, for real? I mean, sure, maybe there’s something wrong on my server, but Dreamhost doesn’t have any status messages to that effect posted on their status page.
What could possibly make republishing this content take 45 minutes?

It might be a server load thing. I know that WP can put a huge load on the server is not tuned right (read WP supercache)

I think it's actually putting less of a load on the server than WP, if my server logs are any indication.

    Hi Cecily,
It might also be partly Dreamhost, I am on pair.com with the following install:
I have 2911 entries, 792 comments, and I publish two separate set of static templates for each entry : one to blackphoebe.com and the other set to blackphoebe.mobi (custom for mobile). I am using MT4.23. My rebuild times are around 18-24 mins depending on how fast the server is running.

p.s. No Django or Ruby on Rails on pair.com shared hosting, though they do allow ruby & python just not the continuous processing of RoR & Dj. (which is fine with me, as I like how reliable the servers are for the price. Media Temple does allow RoR and folks are always complaining on Twitter about the unreliability of media temple).

Currently they're cheaper than Dreamhost, because I made the mistake of switching to Dreamhost's Private Server service, and they refuse to switch me back because "I use too many server resources to be put back on shared hosting", when my resource use hadn't changed from when I was on shared hosting before. So even at 24.98/mo (CDN), Pair is cheaper than the $40/mo CDN Dreamhost is trying to hit me up for.
