Speaker: Professor Andrew Dillon (Dean, School of Information, University of Texas at Austin).
Title: Accelerating Learning and Discovery: Refining the Role of Libraries in the 21st Century
Abstract: Libraries have changed more in the past two decades than in the preceding two centuries. Furthermore, we must accept these changes have only begun and are irreversible. But what does this really mean for libraries? In a world driven by technological innovation and economic incentives, the temptation to adopt more business-centric models of information can be difficult to resist. In this lecture I will propose a view of libraries as knowledge accelerators and facilitators of the culturally vital processes of research, learning and reflection that offer an alternative approach.
When and Where: 4:00 p.m., Thursday, September 25, 2008 The Dodson Room, 3rd Floor, Irving K. Barber learning Centre (IKBLC) 1961 East Mall, University of British Columbia
A reception will follow in the Bralorne Room, SLAIS, IKBLC.
