Taking Stock: Collaborative Photography Exhibition

09.07.2008

Yesterday I participated in the Taking Stock Collaborative Photography Exhibition. The event started with a scavenger hunt where participants were given a list of items to “collect” with our digital cameras. We weren’t allowed to use cars, but feet, bikes, and using transit was encouraged. I was on a team with Tris, his girlfriend Sharon, and Aki, and I think their shots were far better than mine. Still, here’s a small sampling of some of the photos I took during the day:

Afterward I attended the Collaborate Photography Exhibition at Rhizome Cafe. The organizers gathered all the photos of the participants and ran a slideshow (with music) on a loop. We all got to ooh and ah, gush and exclaim, laugh and smile over everyone’s photos.
A couple of interesting things happened that night: after seeing my photos in an exhibition, I started to feel like an artist instead of a hack with an expensive camera. But the best, and most surprising thing to happen that night was this: as I sat there with friends old and new I actually felt at home in Vancouver, like I was part of a community.
A girl could get used to that kind of thing.
