"White people, please beat your kids."

While sitting at the desk after Toddler Storytime the other day, watching some very … willful … children exercise their will, one of the librarians said “White people, please beat your kids” under her breath.  She, like me, is an immigrant, and had the experience of ass whuppin’s handed out freely and often as a means of correction.   This clip from Canadian Comedian Russell Peters is the source of that quote, and is well worth watching.

    Yeah, um, my Daddy handed out plenty of ass whippins in my day. I say again, plenty. So maybe it’s more of a cultural thing. I mean, a Southern family moving to Vancouver would be considered an immigrant family right?

    If you weren’t born here, you’re an immigrant. :)
    I also think it’s a class thing, which Peters doesn’t really touch on. His perspective seems Canadian though, as I knew a few white kids growing up who also had their hides tanned now and again.

    Thanks for posting this video, it made me laugh and laugh and laugh. Then I went and watched all the videos of Mr. Peters on YouTube.

    p.s. The last spanking I received was at 10 when I gave my 2 year old sister a “cannibal” bowl haircut. I was also grounded and not allowed to watch the finale of the Roots miniseries on TV. This was the real tragedy.
