I visited CBC.ca’s website this morning (like I do so many mornings) but today was the first time I used the location preferences feature (driven there because I was envious of Toronto’s weather - sunny and 71 degrees. In October.)
CBC.ca’s localization widget from Cecily Walker on Vimeo.
What’s to like about this? The animation is well done and unobtrusive. The animated spinning cursor lets users know that the site is searching for the city they entered. I wish it were possible to search for the news and CBC Radio localizations, but I suppose the designers went with pop-up menus because there are a limited number of choices available.
The only thing that could make this better would be to have an AJAX version of the widget that doesn’t load in a new window, but that’s a small quibble. The more I visit the CBC’s recently redesigned website, the more I find to like there. It’s nice to see that Canada’s national broadcaster takes web and interaction design seriously.
