I received an invite for Pownce, a social networking service that allows its users not only to participate in twitter-like microblogging, but lets you send files, links, and events to people in your social network. Many of these features are available in instant messaging clients, but Pownce allows you to send these items to one person, or to every person in your social network. I haven’t yet fully embraced the service, but to be fair, I’ve not yet used it to the fullest either. Still, I was surprised during the registration process when I encountered this screen:

Oh, sure. Male and female are represented, but Girl? Bird? Chicky-poo? Why isn’t woman one of the choices? When I encountered this list and saw that the word woman had been omitted, it was as if Pownce had delivered a subtle message that I wasn’t in the target audience for this particular social networking service.

(By the way, I have six pownce invites if you’re interested in signing up.)
