Annie Liebowitz does The Queen - “If ever there was a case of photography challenging painting, and winning on its chosen battleground, this is it. Leibovitz does the job no serious contemporary painter would take on, that of beautifying age and celebrating majesty.”
The saints go marching in - You might think that a two-part documentary on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA, The Mormons) would be as exciting as paint dry. If you did think that, you’d be terribly wrong, and Matt Zoller Seitz agrees. “It’s meticulous and addictive, the TV equivalent of a thick nonfiction book that you start reading after dinner and finish at dawn.” Watch the full program online at PBS, and don’t just head toward the prurient polygamy bits. I was more interested in why the Mormons are so all-fired interested in genealogy. Thanks to the documentary, I now know why, and am sufficiently unnerved by that knowledge.
Digital diversity - Radio Canada International (RCI) is soliciting entries for it’s Digital Diversity competition. If you’re interested in issues surrounding immigration (in Canada), you may submit a podcast or 3 to 8 minute video in one of the following categories:
- Biography of an emerging talent or inspirational figure from an immigrant community in Canada;
- Fictional subject or animated short about immigration in Canada from your perspective;
A jury will select entries for the competition to be held online in Fall, 2007. Winners will be selected by the general public.
